Arizona state representative Alexander Kolodin used ChatGPT to help write part of a new law regulating deepfakes in elections.
The law allows candidates and residents to ask a judge to determine the authenticity of supposed deepfakes, aiming to counter AI-generated misinformation.
Kolodin, a Republican, utilized ChatGPT to define “digital impersonation” for the bill, highlighting the practical use of the technology.
The bill passed unanimously in both legislative chambers and was signed by the Democratic governor.
Kolodin shared a screenshot of ChatGPT’s response defining a deepfake, which was similar to the bill’s language.
Kolodin admitted his lack of expertise in computer science, prompting him to seek help from ChatGPT for technical terminology.
He described the use of ChatGPT as a fun and effective way to demonstrate the technology.
