The Colorado Artificial Intelligence Act (CAIA) is a new law in Colorado that aims to protect individuals from algorithmic discrimination by artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
The law imposes a general duty of reasonable care on both developers and deployers of “high-risk” AI systems that make “consequential decisions” about people.
The CAIA requires developers to provide detailed product descriptions and deployers to conduct impact assessments, disclose their use of high-risk AI, and give individuals certain rights like the ability to opt out of having their data processed by an AI system.
Deployers must also undertake risk management practices.
The CAIA is enforced by the Colorado Attorney General, with penalties of up to $20,000 per violation.
It is seen as a significant step towards state-level regulation of AI, and its approach could influence other states legislation.
