Peter Sands is the Executive Director of The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (Global Fund), a position he has held since March 2018. Formerly CEO of Standard Chartered PLC (2006–2015), Sands managed one of the world’s major international banks, guiding it successfully through the global financial crisis without needing government bailouts.
After leaving banking, he shifted focus to global health: as a research fellow at Harvard Global Health Institute and the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government (Harvard Kennedy School), he worked on financial regulation, fintech and health-system financing. At the Global Fund, Sands has spearheaded major resource mobilization efforts, including record-breaking replenishments and strategic reforms to ensure sustainable, impactful funding for HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria programs globally. His expertise spans finance, global health policy, strategic leadership, and systems strengthening — contributing significantly to global efforts toward ending major epidemics and enhancing health equity worldwide.
