Lucilla Sioli is the Director of the European Artificial Intelligence Office (EU AI Office) under DG CONNECT at the European Commission. She has served as an EU civil servant since 1997.
Holding PhDs in economics from the University of Southampton (UK) and the Catholic University of Milan (Italy), she brings strong analytical, regulatory-policy and economic-policy expertise to her role.
In her current position, Sioli leads the coordination of the EU’s AI strategy — including implementation of the Artificial Intelligence Act, oversight of general-purpose AI regulation, fostering trustworthy AI development, and advancing AI research & innovation. She also directs efforts bridging AI policy, safety, compliance, and “AI for good” initiatives across member states and globally.
Under her leadership, the EU AI Office is structured to cover regulation & compliance, AI safety, innovation & policy coordination, excellence in AI/robotics, and societal-good use cases — setting the foundation for Europe’s globally influential AI governance framework.
