Dr. Ansgar Koene currently serves as the Global AI Ethics & Regulatory Leader at Ernst & Young (EY), advising on AI governance, policy, and trustworthy deployment worldwide. He holds a PhD in Computational Neuroscience and an MS in Electrical Engineering—reflecting a strong technical background that underpins his work in AI ethics, standards, and digital governance. Before EY, he was a multidisciplinary research scientist, publishing on digital-technology governance, data privacy, computational neuroscience, and human-AI interaction.
Beyond corporate advisory, Koene is Senior Research Fellow at the Horizon Digital Economy Research Institute (University of Nottingham), a trustee of the 5Rights Foundation (focused on digital rights for young people), and an advisor to several NGOs on AI and data ethics. He chairs the workgroup for the IEEE P7003 Working Group on Algorithmic Bias Considerations, contributes to international AI standards (e.g., via ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42 and the CEN‑CENELEC Focus Group on AI), and co-authored influential policy reports on algorithmic transparency and accountability.
Through his combined academic and professional roles, Koene has significantly helped shape frameworks for responsible AI—bridging technical, ethical, legal, and regulatory dimensions to promote fairness, transparency, and societal trust in AI deployments.
