There are currently no rules or regulations that apply specifically to AI in Ireland and the advent of AI, Big Data and ML presents novel issues for which the Irish legal system is at best only partially equipped. National Strategy for AI aims at implementing the recommendations
of Cédric Villani report on AI (March 28th 2018). It is composed of an
ambitious national program dedicated to research, numerous policies
dedicated to AI dissemination in the economy and the administration,
and several initiatives to encourage trustworthy AI. The article on
AI regulatory sandboxes has been “considerably shortened and
simplified in order to provide more flexibility for the member states
when establishing such sandboxes,” reads the introductory note to
the compromise document obtained by EURACTIV. The text goes back
to provisions previously proposed by the French to avoid putting too
many constraints on national authorities by either removing or watering
down their obligations, for instance, on the aspect of reporting or
cooperation with other authorities.
